چکیده

The macro electromyography method was developed in the 1980s. Since then, technical modifications have been made, and a number of conditions have been explored. This study is a methodological introduction and an update of findings in some nerve–muscle disorders. The spike component of a motor unit potential (MUP) recorded by a concentric or monopolar needle electromyography (EMG) electrode is generated primarily by fibers within 1–2 mm of the needle recording area. Given that a MUP’s typical anatomical reach is 5–15 mm in diameter, it follows that conventional EMG is unable to record activity from the entire motor unit. Such information could promote understanding of muscle in health and disease. Macro EMG, with its large recording area, appears to provide this information by recording the activity from most of the fibers in a given motor unit. The value of combining macro EMG with single-fiber EMG and conventional EMG recordings is discussed. Muscle Nerve 000: 000–000, 2011

AAEM minimonograph #36: basic concepts of electricity and electronics in clinical electromyography.

Fundamental principles of electricity provide a basis for understanding the design and operation of electromyography equipment. An intuitive and quantitative explanation of charge, voltage, current, and impedance provides an introduction to the concepts of resistance, capacitance, and input impedance. These concepts form the basis for discussion of filters, amplifiers, electrodes, digital elect...

AAEM minimonograph 32: the electrodiagnostic examination in patients with radiculopathies. American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

The anatomy and pathophysiology of radiculopathies are reviewed, and the electrodiagnostic approaches used in evaluating patients with suspected root lesions are discussed. Such electrophysiologic procedures include motor and sensory nerve conduction studies, late-response studies, somatosensory and motor evoked potentials, nerve root stimulation, and needle electromyography. The value and limi...

American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine evidenced-based review: use of surface electromyography in the diagnosis and study of neuromuscular disorders.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) measures myoelectrical signals recorded from sensors placed on the skin surface. The non-invasive nature of sEMG makes it a potentially useful technology for studying diseases of muscle and nerve. Reviews published by the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) and the Therapeutics and Technology Assessment Subcommittee of the...

AAEM position statements. Billing for same day evaluation and management and electrodiagnostic testing.

The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is concerned about an emerging pattern among some payors to deny reimbursement of evaluation and management (E/M) codes to physicians who also bill an electrodiagnostic medicine code (e.g., 95886, 95900) on the same day. This practice is not appropriate. There are many patient-physician interactions that clearly requ...
